VIPKid: Travel the World AND Make Money?

With 20+ countries wearing my passport down and no plans of me stopping soon, people always ask what/why/when/how I’m living this life. I’m not here to sell you the “Quit your job and travel” but I can tell you about my side-hustle that’s turned into a full time gig.

What is VIPKid?

Plenty of times I’ve heard “Is this real? I thought it was a scam”, not even close! VIPKID is a fun and easy remote job that makes my traveling lifestyle possible! I make more than $3000 a month working 4-5 hours a day from any country in the world!

VIPKID is an online ESL company, based in China, that hires North American teachers to teach adorable students in China. They are quickly expanding into other Asian countries. Very quickly, hints why we have 60,000 teachers. VIPKID offers a variety of curriculums but majority of the classes are 25-minutes and one-on-one. We teach lessons based on Common Core through an online portal. The lesson materials are provided by VIPKID and the lessons are engaging and fun! Most of the students range from ages 5-12 but they can be younger and older.

Let me Coach You!

Now here’s the rundown on VIPKID. The good. The bad. The sometimes ugly.

  • U.S. or Canadian resident

  • Bachelor’s Degree in any field

  • 1 year of traditional teaching or relevant experience like coaching, mentoring, volunteering or alternative education

    In addition,

  • Working computer w/webcam (built-in or external) and high speed internet

  • Headphones with mic. Apple earbuds are only acceptable during interview process.

  • Props/Rewards. I’m a digital nomad, so most are done from phone or easy for me to travel with.

  • Educational Background. Think world maps, name displays, and fun colors : )

VIPKID’s payment can be a bit confusing at first. Your initial interview, credentials and experience determine your base pay. That will be $7-9 per 25-minute classes, which is $14-18. There are extra incentives throughout the pay period, you receive $1 for showing up to class and $1 for completing at least 45 classes in one month. So now you are making $9-11 per 25-minute class which is $18-22 an hour! All from your comfy home in your favorite pajama pants.

VIPKID offers “Short-Notice Bookings” for an additional $2 and $5 for every new student you get to signup for the program. They also offer both bi-weekly and monthly pay.

We can refer new teachers to the company, as this is another way to bring in more monthly income. Please don’t forget to use my referral : TAYLO0042 if you decide to join our company. By using my code you are creating a mentor relationship, as I will help you through the process. As a Fast Pass Coach, I have mentored a number of candidates through this same process. I’m here to answer your questions, help you prep for the interview, and practice for your interview.

 So What’s the Catch?

The Hours. The peak teaching hours are from as early as 4am to 9:30am EST. including 9pm-12am on Friday/Saturday. Sometimes it’s hard smiling and singing “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Stars” at 5am. But what is coffee for, right? Plus you set your own hours, not a morning person, don’t start classes at 4am. Simple.

Chinese Parents. Expect a lot for what they pay, while I have great reviews, I know some parents who have reviewed teachers badly for yawning, coughing, sneezing too much. Yawning! We’re not robots. However 99.7% of parents are just as great as their children.

Self-Marketing. VIPKID gives parents the control to book which teachers they like. So based on your profile pictures, video and ratings parents/children determine if they want to take a class with you. This can go either way, as it took me about 3 months to retain “regulars” or be “fully booked” . I know some it took 2 weeks, others 6 months. Everyone’s journey is very different.

However the Pros outweigh

Flexibility. Flexibility. FlexibilityWhile most Chinese companies lock you into minimum 6 month contracts, set for the same days/times through the duration, VIPKID is not like that. I work as much and as little as I want and make my schedule 2 weeks out (which can be a pain if you someone invites you somewhere last minute). However, my friends now know, if you want me somewhere let me know well in advanced or its. not. happening. Cancelling classes will count against you in a number of ways.

Adorable Students. Honestly, I didn’t think I would get so attached to my “regulars” I look forward to seeing them each week. Watching their progress development from class to class. Developing relationships with people half-way across the world. It’s incredible! The impact you have with some these families.

What’s the Interview Process?

Step 1: Fill out your application

If you meet the basic requirements then go ahead to VIPKID and apply! The first step is the application and it is the easiest step. Be sure to include ALL relevant experience with kids even tutoring, camp counselor, babysitting, mentoring etc. The application is screened for basic requirements so as long as you make sure to highlight all of those then you should move to the next step!

Step 2: Interview + Short Teaching Demo + Fast Pass Sessions

If your application is accepted then you will be sent an e-mail asking you to choose a time slot for your online interview and teaching demo. This step is the most important one and does take some preparation! VIPKID will send you the materials for your demo. The demo and interview should last only 30 minutes. Do as much prep as you can because this step will determine your pay rate!

I recommend watching Youtube videos, preparing props and rewards, use TPR (Total Physical Response, have a simple educational background, keep your energy high and smile. Most importantly make sure you are having F.U.N! We want you to be apart of this company and will do what it takes to help you succeed! NOTE: DO NOT go out and spend crazy amounts of money on props, rewards, backgrounds. You shouldn’t have to pay for a job you don’t have. Get creative! Use things you have lying around the house. Once you’re hired, spend as much as you like : )

The interview and demo will be conducted by a mock mentor. The staff will act like a child and you will do the lesson to show your teaching style, energy level and ability to educate an ESL learner through the online classroom.

Fast Pass Sessions

VIPKID offers Fast Pass Sessions across the US and Canada. These 3 hours sessions prep you for Step 4 Mock Class. When you attend this sessions you are able to bypass both Step 2-3. Check out there are sessions in your area

Step 3: Introduction to Teaching

In this step VIPIKD provides training materials and an online quiz. In order to move forward you have to pass the online quiz. You can take the quiz as many times as you want so no need to stress, but the material is important for the job so I suggest reading through it.

Step 4: The Mock Class

This next step is a BIG one! You have read the materials and hopefully watched some videos to prepare. The mock class is a full 25- minute lesson where you will show your abilities as a teacher to a seasoned VIPKID teacher (who will play the role of the student). Make sure to implement the feedback you received from your interview.

This step is the final one and the one that will most likely take the longest time to prepare for.

Step 5: Sign Contract and Upload Docs

Congratulations! You are now a VIPKID teacher! This step is just to complete your teacher account by uploading your diploma, signing your contract and completing your teacher bio! You also have to upload an intro video and a couple photos!

I’ve recently updated my video for our “NiHao” challenge. Here’s what the parents and students see when they look at my profile.

I’ve always wondered about doing something like this. I don’t know if I would be cut out for such early hours, but it seems like a great way to supplement your income if you are traveling or busy or just in between things. How long have you been doing it?

When I first started freelancing, I looked at something like this, because my background is in linguistics and many of my college peers ended up taking such jobs. During the long job search I did trying to get out of food service I saw VIPKID specifically a lot. It’s good to know that it’s actually a good job! I never ended up taking it because I ended up doing another kind of location-free job, but if I run into anyone curious I’ll direct them towards your review!
